Disney to run anti-smokng ads on future DVD's
July 15, 2008
The California's Tobacco Control Program has created anti-smoking ads that
will appear in Disney, Sony, Universal, Warner Bros., Twentieth Century Fox and Paramount DVD's.
The ads will appear in any new DVD
rated G, PG and PG-13 which includes a scene in which there is smoking.
The first ad will appear in Sony's "21" DVD set for July 22
release. It is titled "Icons" and features a dying wheelchair bound man in comparison to the tobacco company's trademark images of
a DJ, cowboy and 1920's flapper.
Lisa Paulsen, president of the Entertainment Industry Foundation stated
"Placing these ads on DVDs
will remind viewers that movies are fiction but the damage smoking does is real."
In 2007, Disney announced that smoking will no longer
be permitted in their family film. A study conducted by the American Legacy group determined that in G, PG and PG-13 rated movies,
75 percent had scenes with smoking.
